Genealogy Resources

Here is a list of some of the genealogy resources I have used to build the Herschbach Family Tree.

Family Tree Maker - The best selling genealogy program. The program makes great use of it's website, giving a researcher access to many information sources online. A lot of basic information can be found doing online searches of the Family Tree Maker Database.

Owning Family Tree Maker automatically provides you with free web space at the Family Tree Maker website. You can put up your own home page, and export reports and other information to your website. You are also allowed space for photographs and other images. You can search these User Home Pages for information. I maintain a basic page there.

Gedpage - The most common form of genealogy data file is called the GED or GEDCOM file. Family Tree Maker can export to this format. Gedpage can take a GED file and convert it to a set of web pages. This is how the hyperlinked version of the family tree was produced. With this site now over 1000 pages, it is the only practical way to present this type of information on the web. There are other programs available, but I found Gedpage to be easy to use, while allowing for a great deal of customization. A great little program!

Cyndi's List - Tens of thousands of indexed genealogy links! The best starting point on the web for genealogy research.

Rootsweb.com - Free genealogy search resource.

GenCircles - Site specializing in contributed family trees.

Ancestry.com Search Page - Vast amount of family information online, some free, some for a fee.

Google! - My favorite search engine is Google! I have found a lot of family contacts and other information just by searching the web itself. Google! has a very large database, and an uncanny ability to zero in on information.
